内容简介：Natural disasters pose growing threats to globally interconnected supply chains, yet limited empirical evidence exists on how disruptions originating at second-tier (Tier-2) suppliers affect downstream firms. This study investigates the impact of Tier-2 natural disaster exposure on the operating performance of focal firms and examines the moderating role of first-tier (Tier-1) supplier resilience. Leveraging a 15-year panel of 16,909 buyer–supplier dyads linked with EM-DAT disaster records, we quantify Tier-2 exposure based on geospatial proximity to disaster events and assess Tier-1 resilience through production adaptability and inventory slack. Findings from fixed effects models reveal that Tier-2 disasters significantly reduce buyer operating performance, confirming that disruptions can propagate through indirect, upstream pathways. Tier-1 production resilience mitigates this negative effect, whereas Tier-1 inventory slack does not consistently moderate the impact—suggesting that inventory buffers may be more effective when maintained by focal firms. Supplementary analyses show that the disruptive impact of Tier-2 risks is amplified when Tier-1 suppliers are themselves exposed, and that effects vary by geography.
This study advances ripple effect theory by empirically identifying both transmission and amplification mechanisms across multiple supply chain tiers. It underscores the strategic importance of resilience to manage escalating climate-related risks in complex global supply networks.
